Meet John Pomeroy

Hi there, I’m John Pomeroy. Since 1973, I have been a professional animator for film, television, and the gaming industry. Starting my artistic journey as an oil painter led me to The Walt Disney Company, where I began my career as a background painter. However, once I learned to animate, I fell in love with the process of creating a living character on paper.

After one short year at Disney, I was promoted to the role of full animator on the beloved classic, Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too. While working on this production, I met animators

Don Bluth and Gary Goldman. The three of us had such great creative chemistry together that we teamed up and created our own animation studio, Don Bluth Productions, later known as Bluth Group. Together, we created several memorable classics such as The Secret of NIMH in 1982 as well as An American Tail, The Land Before Time, and animations for the classic video games, Space Ace and Dragon’s Lair. In 1995, I returned to Disney to work as supervising animator on Pocahontas where I designed the character of John Smith and led a team of fourteen animators to bring him to life. I also worked as an animator on Treasure Planet, Curious George, and Fantasia 2000 for which I was a supervising animator and I also designed the character of Milo Thatch in Atlantis: The Lost Empire.

Aside from animation, I love painting portraits and historical scenes as well as illustrating, storyboarding, sculpting, and of course, teaching. I am looking forward to teaching you and I hope that you will join me at Pomeroy Art Academy!
